Sophie Auster spent the better part of 2019 putting out new music and touring the US and Europe. Her last full length album, Next Time, was released in April 2019 through BMG worldwide and the EP, History Happens at Night, just dropped November 1st (BMG). She spent the summer opening for, Rock & Roll Hall of fame inductee,  Bryan Ferry and just returned from her own headlining tour in Europe. She plans to continue working on new music with producer, Daniel Schlett.

Sophie Auster - the “sultry chanteuse” (NY Times) and folk-pop musician described as embodying “The Sound of New York” – has just released ‘History Happens At Night” via BMG, a two-song EP featuring the singles “If I Could” and Leave The Door Open.”

“If I Could” is about taking a chance on love,” Auster explains. “When I described the feeling I wanted to create to my producer Daniel Schlett, I said it should feel as if you are diving off a big mountain with your arms spread, but an invisible net catches you. I wanted to create a feeling of pure exhilaration and joy. My challenge for this song was to create something romantic and uptempo that isn’t corny or cliched. For me, being a songwriter is about capturing moods and being true to the different stages in my life. I’m very happy right now and I wanted my music to reflect that.”

Auster’s music is replete with fantasy and escapism, a sonic fusion of bluesy folk-pop with cabaret dramatics reminiscent of Lana Del Rey and Sara Bareilles. T Style called her "sultry and folksy,” with “soul-(and teeth-) baring lyrics…that’s drawn comparisons to Fiona Apple and Gillian Welch.” Elle Magazine dubbed her “Auster on Fire.”

“’Leave The Door Open’ is about the first and only big fight, to this date, that I’ve had with my husband when we first started dating,” Auster continued. “He left in the middle of the argument and took a bike back home to his apartment in Brooklyn. I was very upset that he didn’t want to stay and have it out, but I also understood that I was in the wrong. The song is about taking ownership of yourself, learning how to apologize, and meeting halfway.”

Auster has carved out a unique path for herself as a songwriter, receiving several awards abroad and at home like the John Lennon Songwriting Contest Grand Prize. She has graced the cover of Cosmopolitan Spain (where she was named “Singer of the Year”), as well as those of Rolling Stone Spain and D la Repubblica, who praised Auster for her “diva voice” drawing comparisons to “…Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Tom Waits, Fiona Apple.”

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Auster released her last full-length album ‘Next Time’ in April 2019. The New York Times praised it for its "sultry, folksy vocals," and W Magazine called it "soaring." John Osburn of the acclaimed music blog, Obsburt raved: "Each song was a realization, and a high point. Her voice is relentlessly surprising, shimmering with folk, blues, concert rock, and cabaret."

Media Acknowledgement for Sophie Auster:

“Sophie Auster seems to be poised for stardom, with the vocal ability of a jazz singer, the knack of writing music with the edginess of rock, yet the catchiness of pop and the sensuality of soul, and the look of a trend-setting fashion model…the pop melodies and indelible hooks suggest she could cross over into massive chart success.” (Jay N. Miller/For The Patriot Ledger)

“Sophie Auster’s voice is perhaps the most immediately entrancing thing about her… Sophie exercised a strange, strong, lovely sense of emotional tact with her delivery… I’d keep an eye out for a more outlaw Sophie in the future.”  (Joshua Zoerner, Third Coast Review)

“Sophie has a diva voice and an elegant style and in her music (that she defines as “classical with pop and jazz influences”) we can see models such as Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Tom Waits, Fiona Apple.”
— D La Repubblica

‘’…”Mexico”, a song that is reminiscent of a 50’s film noir filmed “south of the border”. Enriched by the sound of lively trumpets and irresistibly sung, the song brings out both the charisma of Auster’s voice and her talent as a songwriter.”
